Dojo History

The Rocky Mountain Dojo is a member of the International Karate Organization (IKO) Kyokushin-Kaikan (Canada) & the IKO headquarted in Tokyo, Japan. It opened its doors in January 1991 when Don moved to Cranbrook for work. In that time it has registered more than 400 students and currently has 100 active members.

Senior Class: Monday : 7:15PM to 9:15PM, Fighting training / goshin jutsu / kata
Senior Class: Thursday : 7:15PM to 9:15PM, Kihon / ido kihon / kata / goshin jutsu

Senior Instructor
Don Corrigal - Head Instructor :
 

 

The chief instructor of the dojo is Don Corrigal, 6th dan, registered with the IKO. He brings more than 35 years experience of training to his teaching. Don has trained Kyokushin Karate since February 1968. In that time he has trained with the late Sosai Mas Oyama, 10th dan, founder of Kyokushin: Shihan Bobby Lowe, 8th dan, the most senior instructor in the IKO: Kancho Shokei Matsui, 8th dan, current head of the IKO. Shihan has also represented Canada at the 13th All Japan Championships in 1982 in Tokyo & 3rd World Tournament in 1984 in Tokyo. He is an IKO Registered Referee since 1988, and was recently a center referee and corner judge at the 8th World Open Tournament, November 1 an and has coached a number of Canadian teams to the World Tournaments in Japan. Shihan Don continues to be active in the IKOK(C) and the parent IKO KyokushinKaiKan in training Kyokushin Karate.

Hunter Corrigal
 Shodan, started training Kyokushin Karate in 1984 at age 4 in the Kelowna Dojo and has continued to train since that time. 
Shawn Marlow
Shodan, started training Kyokushin karate with Shihan Don in 1992 in Cranbrook.
Joel Hewko
Shodan, was introduced to kyokushin karate by his sister, Lara, a former student of the dojo and started training with Shihan Don in 1995. Joel is currently enrolled in the Psycology Department of the University of BC pursuing his degree.
Dan Ogloff
Shodan, started training Kyokushin Karate in 1995. Dan had trained for 10 years in Chito-ryu Karate before that and switched to Kyokushin when he moved to the East Kootenay area. He currently is an assistant instructor with the Richmond Dojo under Shihan Stuart Corrigal.
Jerry Gilchrist
Shodan, started training in kyokushin karate in March 1998 with Shihan Don in Cranbrook.
Bill Stalker
Shodan, started his training in Kyokushin Karate in Cranbrook in January 1995.
