PART 9 - Cranbrook Community Festival, May 7 2006

Each year the City of Cranrbook sponsors its community festival – Sam Steele Days. The festival is named after Sam Steele. He led the first outpost of the North West Mounted Police (fore runner to the RCMP) into the Kootenay area of British Columbia and founded what is now Fort Steele. The Rocky Mountain Kyokushin Karate Club gets involved each year in the festival as a club event, and this year has expanded its activities. The festival sponsors the Sam Steele Pageant for young women. The pageant organizers asked the club to put on a self defense session for the young women entered in the pageant. So on Sunday, May 7, 2006, 4 members of the dojo went to one of the pageantfs training sessions and presented personal safety for young women. Don Corrigal, senior instructor for the dojo lead the sessions with the help of Diane Hamm, Grayson Clague & Maxine Adshead, assistant instructors from the dojo. The session was well received.

The previous weekend the other senior instructors from the dojo, Jerry Gilchrist & Bill Stalker also did a personal safety session for the Cranbrook Bugle Band. This was also well received.

The dojo will conclude its seasonfs community involvement by running the local watering hole for the Sam Steele Days Festival to raise money for equipment & travel for the dojo.
