PART 3 - 4th Rocky Mountain Kyokushin Karate Tournament (January 18th, 2003)
|
On November 22 the Rocky Mountain Kyokushin Karate Club sponsored its
4th annual tournament. The event was held in Cranbrook and was well
attended by students and instructors from around BC & Alberta. It
attracted a total of ~160 competitors from 6 years of age to 50+ years
of age.
The event started Friday night with a senior belt training session
hosted by the Rocky Mountain Dojo. The first hour of training consisted
of instruction in Naihanchi 1, 2, 3, & Sushiho. The second hour consisted
of working the complete 32 counts of the Happo kuzushi. This was followed
by the application of the movements found in the happo kuzushi in concert
with the principles & techniques found in Tensho kata.
The following Saturday morning the tournament itself started at 9:00am with
kata competition starting at the white belt level and culminating with the
open and team division.
The afternoon consisted of double elimination format continuous non-contact
sparring divisions, children's knockdown divisions, adult knockdown divisions
and finishing with the Men's Open division fighting using the international
knockdown rules of the International Karate Organization KyokushinKaiKan.
Just prior to the Open division fighting Don Corrigal, the senior instructor
for the Rocky Mountain Dojo put on a self-defense demonstration consisting
of Tensho kata, Happo kuzushi, and some jiyu gyaku kumite (freestyle self
defense fighting).
The 5th Rocky Mountain Kyokushin Karate Tournament is scheduled for November
6, 2004 in Cranbrook and the Dojo members invite Kyokushin members to put it
on your calendars and plan to attend in 2004.
