On Saturday November 12th 2005 The
Annual South Okanagan Kyokushin
Karate Tournament was held in
Canadafs gWine Capitalh, beautiful
Oliver B.C.
Weather conditions held out for
competitors traveling and all those
who attended including judges and
officials. This year gKatah
competition was added to the program
and was met with anxious karateka
wishing to test their abilities.
Events
started with a judges meeting Friday
afternoon followed by a two hour
training session for all ages and
belts levels. Shihan Don Corrigal
was to head this session with a long
line up of Senseifs and Sempaifs in
the front row. Training consisted of
kihon, ido- geko, kata and
self-defense.
Tournament
day:
Weigh inc Competitors lined up out
the door, as this was to be Oliverfs
gBest Everh tournament! Competition
weighed in from as small as 45lbs.
in the non-contact division, to the
ggrain- fedh heavy weights in the
C.B and Open divisions!
9:00a.m. - Kata competition begins
with the newest of the Kyokushin
family, the under 12 white belts
which then progressed to the Open
and Team divisions. With kata being
a recent addition to our tournament,
we did not know what to expect.
Kumite is not for everybody and kata
gave those interested, the chance to
compete with other club members.
11.00-a.m Non-
Contact sparring for 12 yrs. and
under begins.
This year we decided to go with a
single elimination format to help
streamline the tournament. By far
this has to be one of the crowds
favourite divisions. Crying,
cheering, laughing, are all shared
by competitors and their parents
alike.
12:30 p.m. Break for
lunch.
A full concession was available as
we stopped for a short break during
which time the Oliver Jujitsu club
was preparing to do a self-defense
demonstration. Two members proceeded
to act out different self- defense
scenarios as the crowd watched the
20-minute demonstration which
included grabs, break falls and
weapon attacks.
1:00 p.m. Knock Down
competition begins.
Competitors that attended came from
all parts of the province and
surrounding areas. Banff, Armstrong,
Penticton, Parksville, Cranbrook,
Campbell River, Lower Mainland,
B.C.Interior, and even Las Vegas
Nevada were home to these serious
athletes.
Fighters of all ages fought with the
true essence of gKyokushin spirith
and proved very entertaining for
all. gKnockouts and extension
roundsh highlighted the excitement
for the much-anticipated Menfs open
Division.
This yearfs tournament was very
successful, and I would like to take
this opportunity to thank those who
attended and the volunteers that
helped to support this event.
Hope to see you next year! Saturday
