The 2005 Okanagan Cup
was held in Penticton
on April 9, 2005, at Princess Margaret
Secondary School. The tournament saw
130 fighters from clubs as far away as
Calgary, New Denver, Newton, Sea
Island, Coquitlam, and Vancouver, as
well as Armstrong, Lumby, Vernon,
Oliver, Princeton, Cawston, Penticton
Westside, and the host Penticton club.
This years Supreme judge was Sensei
Tony Severs from Sea Island dojo. Many
thanks to the Sensei and Sempai who
traveled from far to help out. The day
featured many interesting fights, and
displays of excellent spirit and
fighting abilities.
The tournament began with the
childrenfs Non-contact divisions in
the morning, followed by demonstration
teams from Princeton/Cawston, Oliver,
and Penticton. After the lunch break,
the Knockdown divisions commenced. The
younger competitors had a chance to
display their determination and skills
to the appreciative audience. These
kids are the future of Kyokushin, and
they fought hard!
As the afternoon went on, the teenage
divisions featured many well-fought
matches, and later the adult divisions
battled it out to the delight of the
crowd. In the end, Kris Erickson was
crowned the 2005 OK Cup Open Champion
with a display of powerful fighting
techniques and excellent stamina.
One of the goals in holding the
tournament was to generate more
interest in the Interior of the
province in Kyokushin karate, and this
was evident, as the tournament was
well received by the spectators.
Congratulations and thanks to all of
the fighters who competed, and a big
thank you to the officials. We truly
appreciate your support. The event has
grown from last years event, and we
hope to continue to do so in the years
to come.
Plan to attend the 2006 Okanagan Cup
next Spring!
