The 4th
South Okanagan Kyokushin Karate
Tournament was held on March 27, 2004.
This was the fourth year for the
tournament, but the first one in held
in Penticton, as the tournament was
previously held in Oliver in the past.
The tournament was held here to help
in promotions for the newly acquired
Penticton club, and the large crowd
appreciated the efforts of the
fighters, officials, volunteers and
event organizers.
The tournament
again featured two types of
competition. Non-contact bouts (double
elimination) and knockdown matches.
The quality of the fighters in this
region has vastly improved over the
years, and it was an exciting day,
with many good matches. There were 75
competitors at this years event.
Clubs from Langley,
Vancouver, Newton, Armstrong, Lumby,
Princeton, Cawston, Oliver, Penticton
Westside, Naramata/Penticton, and OK
Falls/Penticton had participants
entered. Many thanks to the dojos in
these areas for sending fighters.
The non-contact
divisions were held in the morning,
followed by some demonstration teams.
Members from the OK Falls/Penticton
dojo showed the enthusiastic crowd
that Kyokushin Karate is not just
about fighting. The team demonstrated
some basic kihon techniques, a variety
of katas, some board breaks with
various hand and foot techniques.
As well, the
audience was treated to an interesting
demonstration from the Penticton Judo
Club, with Sensei Henry Boas (6th
dan) leading the team. Many thanks to
our demo teams.
The afternoon
featured the knockdown fighting that
Kyokushin is famous for. The 12 years
and under divisions had many exciting
fights, and the gym was filled with
cheering, as the young warriors
battled each other with tremendous
spirit. The teen divisions, which saw
energy filled battles from determined
competitors followed, and the 17 and
over divisions saw some great
technical fights…. (as well as some
just plain old smash and bash
matches!)
Our heartfelt
thanks go out to the competitors,
spectators, volunteers, officials, and
the sponsors who helped make this
possible. Many thanks to Shihan Stuart
Corrigal for the opportunity to host
this event. Osu. We are optimistic
that our tournament will grow in the
future, and take this opportunity to
extend our invitation to all of you to
attend next years event here in
Penticton.
Osu!
