History of the Dojo

The first Kyokushin Dojo in Calgary and was started in September 1994 by Kim Fradley. Since that time Calgary Kyokushin Karate has expanded to two locations, one at the original Dojo, the McKenzie Lake Community Centre and one at the Parkland Community Centre. Currently there are over 150 active students.

Brad Gillespie - Head Instructor :
Brad Gillespie began training in 1987 in Vernon, British Columbia under Sensei Herb Milton. In 1991 he moved to Hawaii for 4 months to train under Shihan Bobby Lowe (8th dan). In 1999 he moved to Calgary, Alberta where he assumed operations of the Calgary Club. He was promoted to sandan in October 2004, and in September 2009, opened Calgary’ second Kyokushin Dojo in the community of Parkland.

 

Sensei Brad has participated and placed in many national and international events including: 1991 Canadian Heavyweight Title, 1991 All Hawaiian Open Champion, and 1997 Canadian Open Champion. Brad was also on the Canadian Teams for North American Championships in 1995, 97, 98 and the 5th, 6th, and 7th World Tournaments in 1991, 95 and 1999. He is also an accomplished Kata competitor.

His international training experience include seminars at Mitsumine (Japan), Hawaii, and all North American black belt conferences. He is also an internationally certified official who has judged at the World Championships.
Brad's fondest memories include training with Shihan Lowe, shaking Sosai Oyama's hand in 1989 when he was in Canada, Instructing at the European Summer Camp in the Netherlands and being a part of the 1995 Canadian Team in Japan.
